A visit to London’s Chinatown on a wet evening, the buzz of the restaurants and the joyous colour of the lights and decorations prompted this response, experimenting with textiles and appliqué
Black fabric supports hand painted silks, satin and yellow polythene. A strip of midnight blue purple on the left of the image has small cut out windows against white silk.
Strips of hand painted silk in pinks, blues and greys are partially covered by torn yellow plastic bag over sewn with lines of stitching. At the base NEW CHINA is overwritten on painted silk in bronze ink and at the top, black beads and tiny purple silk rectangles are sewn into soft pink silk.
